The best-selling cars in the UK have been revealed! For many, it’ll not come as a surprise that the Ford Fiesta has claimed the top spot, again! The 10 best-selling new cars of 2019 looks similar to that of 2018, however, the numbers are slightly lower with the mark being down -2.4% compared to 2018. 2019 marked the third consecutive year of slower sales for the new car market in the UK.

From the looming diesel ban to the increase of road tax, there are a few contributing factors to the decline in the sales of new cars in the UK. However, the list of the best-selling cars 2019 (supplied by data from the SMMT) shows a wide array of family cars, superminis, SUVs and luxurious hatchbacks.

1. Ford Fiesta

77,833 registrations

Ford Fiesta 2020

Ford’s supermini continues to dominate the charts year on year and it’s easy to see why. The Ford Fiesta achieved nearly 78,000 registrations and stormed the chart with a whopping 20,000 more registrations than its rival, the Volkswagen Golf. It’s fun to drive, a small hatchback that is an affordable Ford finance option. It can suit a range of drivers, has low running costs and is available in a range of trims.

2. Volkswagen Golf

58,994 registrations

Volkswagen Golf 2020

In both 2017 and 2018, the Volkswagen Golf came second place in the UK’s best-selling cars. For many, the golf is a timeless classic, with quality and roomy interior and excellent handling. The Mk8 Volkswagen Golf, which will be the biggest overhaul for a number of years arrives in 2020.

3. Ford Focus

56,619 registrations

Ford Focus 2020

Another Ford on the list is the ever-reliable Ford Focus. The new model Focus was released in 2019 so it’s no surprise that the sales charts were strong for this particular model. In recent years, Ford has improved key areas such as rear legroom, boot space, interior quality and on-board technology.

4. Vauxhall Corsa

54,239 registrations

Vauxhall Corsa 2020

The Vauxhall Corsa has long been popular with the younger generation. 5. Mercedes A-Class

53,724 registrations

Mercedes-Benz A-Class 2020

The Mercedes A-Class is a premium hatchback which has seemed to impress UK buyers year on year. It’s pricier than the models listed above but you really do get more bang for your buck. Its packed with the latest technology and its great value, making it an affordable and luxurious choice for any driver.

6. Nissan Qashqai

52,532 registrations

Nissan Qashqai 2020

The Qashqai is without a doubt the most popular SUV in the UK. With so many DUV’s joining the market in 2019, the Qashqai is still selling incredibly well and ended the year in 6th place ahead of its rivals. 2019 saw an introduction of a new 1.3 turbocharged petrol engine which makes a strong performer even better!

7. Ford Kuga

Ford Kuga 2020

A very strong rival of the Nissan Qashqai is the Ford Kuga. The Kuga had a sudden influx of sales in December 2019 which outsold the Nissan Qashqai for that month. The Kuga stands out for its impressive handling, refinement and easy ride. Will we see the Kuga take over the Nissan Qashqai in 2020?

8. MINI Hatch

Mini Hatch 2020

2019 saw the 60th anniversary of the original MINI, which means there was plenty to celebrate and MINI still sees sale success year on year.
